Serra San Quirico
Serra San Quirico is a small town that stands right at
the mouth of the Gola della Rossa gorge, on the left side of the Esino river,
23 km from Genga. Records reveal that the town’s origins date to ancient times,
probably due to its key position. Tangible signs of the Etruscan, Picene and
Roman civilisations have been found there, along with a necropolis of the
Senone tribe of Gaul. The town’s entire territory lies within the Gola della
Rossa and Frasassi Regional Park. The charming old town has preserved its
medieval layout. Particularly striking are the Copertelle, the covered
passageways running alongside the boundary wall, and the main defensive tower
called Cassero, built between 1360 and 1374.
