The
museum is laid out in two separate sections. The prehistory section presents a
series of images and a copy of the Venus of Frasassi figurine. The history and
art section contains works and objects dating from the 15th to the 19th
centuries. Prominent among these are the wonderful panel paintings by the
15th-century artist Antonio da Fabriano, who was influenced by Piero della
Francesca and Flemish painting and whose works have spread beyond Fabriano and
Genga to museums around the world, including the Walters Art Gallery in
Baltimore. Also on display is the glorious neoclassical statue of the Virgin
Mary, loving mother and protector, originally placed in the church commissioned
by Pope Leo XII inside the Cave of the Blessed Virgin of Frasassi.
